"It is not save in Congo Brazza, they will shoot you"

I have been exploring Africa since 1988 and have always met people who love to
spread horror stories. Do we need to believe them? I don’t like this kind of
adrenaline rush, especially when we have a tough journey ahead of us. In my
experience 90% of these stories are rumours and not based on actual facts. In
this case, a Frenchman’s comment in Yaounde: ‘It is not safe in Congo
Brazzaville, you will be shot at the border’ needed some further investigation.
Seeing have limited internet access, this is an easier task for our HQ in
Amsterdam. HQ got into contact with the
British High Commissioner in Kinshasa DRC, who has all the safety details about
Congo Brazza. We received a clear answer: Everything is safe, apart from a few
no-go-zones. But these are not on our scheduled route.
